What is Bonsai?

A Bonsai is a dwarfed plant growing in a container.  The word “Bonsai” (pronounced “bone-sigh”) is a combination of two Japanese words:  “Bon” meaning tray or pot and “Sai” which means to plant.

Bonsai originated in China over 1,000 years ago but was later developed by the Japanese. This particular style of growing trees has become popular in many parts of the world, being both a spiritual and artistic form.

A Bonsai is distinguished from other trees or shrubs by a special quality about it which gives it character.  Often we see the image of a small, gnarled-looking tree with a twisted trunk and splotches of green foliage planted in a ceramic pot.  A bonsai should be a perfect miniature of the same tree fully grown in its native habitat.  Its been said that when you view the bonsai, you should think you are looking through the wrong end of a telescope.

A Bonsai must be a miniature.  This miniaturization is achieved through a combination of pruning and the use of a small pot to restrict growth.  The goal of a Bonsai is to achieve the desired shape while balancing the above ground growth as well as the root growth.Bonsai are kept small by careful control of the plant's growing conditions. Only branches important to the bonsai's overall design are allowed to remain and unwanted growth is pruned away. Roots are confined to a pot and are periodically clipped. Bonsai may have a stylized or an exaggerated form ... but, as found in nature. The appearance of old age of a plant is much prized and bonsai may live to be hundreds of years old. The living bonsai will change from season to season and from year to year requiring pruning and training throughout it's lifetime ... and as time goes on it will become more and more beautiful.
